Director

Dr. Jason Allen Anderson is equally at home on the stage and in the church as a performer, singer, conductor, organist, liturgist and composer. He hails from Franklin, Indiana and is a graduate of Butler University (Indianapolis – B.M. in Music Education), Portland State University (Portland, Oregon – M.M. in Conducting), and the University of Washington (Seattle – D.M.A. in Choral Conducting). He studied voice with Laurel Goetzinger and Dr. Bruce Browne and conducting with Henry Leck, Dr. Bruce Browne, and Dr. Geoffrey Boers. Dr. Anderson’s dissertation “The Life and Works of Peter R. Hallock (b. 1924)” was completed in June 2007; an abstract is available here.

A man of diverse musical interests and talents, Dr. Anderson is currently Associate for Liturgical Arts and Youth Formation and Organist/Choirmaster at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Issaquah, Washington. In July 2009, he was named Director of the famed Compline Choir in residence at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle, Washington. He has served on the Liturgy & Arts Commission for the (Episcopal) Diocese of Olympia and currently serves as Vocal Faculty Coordinator and Faculty Manager for the Midsummer Musical Retreat.

Joel Bevington

Joel Bevington is currently enrolled at the University of Washington as a doctoral student in choral conducting. He graduated in May 2007 from Emory University/Candler School of Theology with a Master of Music in Organ and where he served as the Cannon Chapel Organist and the Music Director. His Bachelor of Music in organ degree is from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music where he also studied choral music and conducting. He served for seven years as Director of Music Ministry at Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church in New Orleans. He is from Albany, Oregon, where his parents, both teachers and musicians, live.

Gregory Bloch

Greg was born on an American military installation in Yokosuka, Japan, and was baptized in the upturned bell of the aircraft carrier USS Midway. He studied music and mathematics at Williams College, and holds a Master’s degree in historical musicology from the University of California, Berkeley. At Saint Mark’s Cathedral, in addition to the Compline Choir, Greg sings in the Cathedral Choir and Evensong Choir, and works as Director of Communications.

Joey Blundell is a member of the Saint Mark’s Cathedral Choir, and moved to Seattle mid-pandemic. Previously, he sang with Saint Paul’s, Burlingame, and Saint John’s Cathedral, Los Angeles.

Scott Fikse

Scott is a graduate student in choral conducting at the University of Washington, as well as a vocal coach, conductor, and choral scholar with various organizations in the greater Seattle area. Scott moved to Seattle from Honolulu in 2022, where he directed the music program at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu and created the church’s popular “First Mondays” and “Jazz Journey” concert series. Under his direction the LCH choirs prepared over 200 works each year, ranging from chant, Renaissance polyphony, and Baroque works to modern masters. He also served as artistic director of Early Music Hawai’i. Outside of musical pursuits, Scott enjoys exploring the diversity of natural wonders Washington has to offer, detecting notes in a craft brew or fine wine, and attempting to become flexible on a yoga mat while his cat watches in bewilderment.

Theo Floor

Theo Floor was born & raised in Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School in 2011. He received his musical training with the Northwest Boychoir and the Garfield jazz bands. There he learned a passionate appreciation for making music, especially as a part of well-trained, tight-knit ensembles. After a few years at WWU muddling his way through his undergrad and working in seafood processing plants in Alaska each summer, he returned home and joined the Seattle Symphony Chorale. He spends as much time as possible riding bikes.

John Garlid

John Kermit Garlid hails from Cos Cob, Connecticut, where he began his vocal journey as a treble in the Men and Boys choir at Christ Church, Greenwich. His passion for music led him to Bard College in New York’s Hudson Valley, where he immersed himself in experimental music and recording engineering, guided by Marina Rosenfeld, Richard Teitelbaum, and James Bagwell.

Seattle became his new home, where he now works as a union stagehand and actively participates in both the Evensong and Compline Choirs at Saint Mark’s Cathedral. Additionally, he takes on the roles of staff singer and music librarian at Epiphany Parish in Madrona, while studying voice under the guidance of esteemed countertenor José Luis Muñoz.

Alongside his harmonic pursuits, John finds great joy in exploring Washington’s rugged peaks and glaciated volcanoes, relishing the beauty of nature’s grandeur; all while doing his best to tend his own garden at home in Leschi. He nurtures a passion for producing electronic music and joins in regular nights of dancing with friends.

Scott Kovacs
Lay Chaplain

Scott Kovacs has been active as a professional choral singer, composer, and conductor for over 25 years. Originally from Phoenix, he moved to Seattle in 2009 and joined The Esoterics as General Manager and now serves as Executive Director of the Emerald Ensemble. In addition to his artistic responsibilities, he serves as the Recovery Specialist for the Mental Health Chaplaincy. He lives just north of Seattle with his cat, Topaz, “The Grey Duchess of Shoreline.”

Carson Lott

Carson Truett Lott is a voice teacher and performer based out of Seattle. Carson holds a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Arts (Choral Music Emphasis) from Seattle University where he studied voice and conducting with Joy Sherman, and a Masters in Vocal Performance from the University of Oregon where he studied voice with Eric Mentzel. He can be seen performing regularly around Seattle with the Compline Choir, Epiphany Parish Seattle where he works as a staff soloist and voice instructor, Evergreen Ensemble, and more. Carson has appeared as a featured soloist with Harmonia Orchestra and Chorus, the Musicking Conference, the Boston Camerata, Inland Northwest Opera, Cascadia Chamber Opera, and Orpheus PDX, and has appeared as a chorus member with Choral Arts Northwest, Byrd Ensemble, and the Oregon Bach Festival Berwick Chorus. Carson also operates as a freelance visual artist, specializing in hand-drawn fantasy cartography.

René Marceau is president of Marceau Pipe Organ Builders in Seattle, a firm he established in 1981. During that time, his shop has completed 42 major projects in locations from San Diego to Anchorage and Great Falls. He holds a BA in music history from Loyola University of Los Angeles and a Masters in Church Music from the University of Southern California. A life long singer, René has participated in both church and concert choirs in Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle. He has also studied organ with David Britton, Ladd Thomas, Lee Garrett, and Peter Hallock. René joined the Saint Mark’s Cathedral Choir in 2005 and The Compline Choir in 2009.

Associate Director

Jeremy Matheis is a conductor, singer, vocal coach, and church musician. He is Associate Director for The Compline Choir, Conductor & Artistic Director for Choir of the Sound, and Director of Music at Bothell United Methodist Church. Jeremy is co-chair for Seattle Sings, a choral festival of the Greater Seattle Choral Consortium.

Joel Matter

Despite having a degree in Computer Science, Joel has sung in church choirs in Seattle for most of his life. He developed an interest in Renaissance music while a teenager, and continued to nurture this interest in college and into adulthood to the present day. Through singing in the Compline Choir, he has learned more about how to sing and been exposed to more repertoire than in other choral situations in which he has participated.

Fred joined the Compline Choir because it has been a part of his life since he began listening to the service as a child and out of a desire to be a part of a community that shares some of the greatest music ever written with others. He graduated from Central Washington University with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 2004 and currently serves as Organist, Choirmaster and Music Teacher at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and School in Lakewood, WA. When not working as a professional musician, Fred enjoys cooking, reading, and traveling.

After earning degrees in music from Pacific Lutheran University and Cornish College of the Arts, Tyler has undergone a major vocation shift into agriculture. With the blessing and support from his wife, Rebekah, he owns and operates a small suburban farm and homestead in Brier, WA, growing organic produce for local communities. He still composes and participates in music when he is able amidst the copious responsibilities of farming, marriage, and fatherhood.

Vernon Nicodemus is a versatile musician, being active in singing, choral directing, and playing trumpet. As a trumpet player, he has played with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, and the Anchorage Symphony. He was trumpet soloist for years with the Northwest Chamber Orchestra. As a vocalist, he has sung with Paul Hillier and Max van Egmond as well as appearing as soloist with groups such as Seattle Pro Musica, Choral Arts, and the Alaska Music Festival. As a studio singer, he has done movies, commercials, video games, and other soundtracks. As a director, he has been Associate Choirmaster of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle for almost thirty years, as well as a member of the Compline Choir there. His first love being ensemble singing, he is a founding member of the vocal ensemble Circa 1600 and he sang in the inaugural and following season of the New York Collegium under the direction of early music luminary Gustav Leonhardt. Raised in Bolivia and Cuba, he has managed to avoid “singing opera” until now.

Ken Pendergrass is in his 25th year of teaching music. He currently teaches choral, general, and instrumental music at Fairmount Park School in West Seattle. He studied music education at the University of Southern California and Biola University, and holds a master of music degree from Western Washington University in choral conducting. He continues to work with a variety of choral groups of all ages throughout the Puget Sound region as a conductor and clinician.

Ken Peterson has degrees in music theory and history from the University of Puget Sound and the University of Washington; he has had a long interest in chant and early music, which began in the Compline Choir. His association with the choir has been the main focus of his spiritual life, resulting in his writing Prayer as Night Falls: Experiencing Compline (Paraclete Press, 2013). He has recently retired from the software industry, and is a Benedictine oblate at St. Placid Priory in Lacey, Washington.

An avid music lover, Jeffrey Ricco has always been involved in music; playing piano and trumpet in his youth and eventually singing and ringing handbells. Music is a very important part of his life, and Compline provides him with a solid and ethereal beginning to his week through the sung words and transcendent voices.

Josh is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and has a private practice in the Lower Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. He sang throughout his childhood in Seoul, South Korea and completed a Minor in Vocal Music at Taylor University. Josh holds his Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, currently serving as a member of the Northwest Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study and on the Board of Directors for COR, the Center for Object Relations. Singing with the Compline Choir each week is one of his deepest joys.

William Turnipseed has degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business from the University of Colorado at Boulder as well as five years of organ study there. Professionally, he works in the engineering and construction industry. His time outside of work is devoted largely to music. He is a singer and an organist. He sings Bass 2 in the Compline Choir. He is also one of the service readers. He is a member of the Compline Choir Board. He also sings in the choir and occasionally plays the organ on Sunday mornings at Church of the Ascension in Seattle.

James graduated with a PhD in computer science from the University of Washington in June 2019. He sings in both the Saint Mark’s Cathedral Choir and Compline Choir. James grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and studied computer science and math at Williams College in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. When he’s not singing or programming, James enjoys drinking coffee and riding his bike, occasionally at the same time.
